The K’ Road edit: Eat, shop and be entertained near Abstract
By The Abstract Team · 16 August 2026
Summary
Karangahape Road is Auckland’s most eclectic street, and Abstract Hotel sits right on it. This edit rounds up eleven K’ Road favourites within walking distance, from Fort Greene’s pastries and Gemmayze Street’s Lebanese menu to Nick Von K’s jewellery studio and Artspace Aotearoa’s contemporary gallery, finishing at Abstract’s own Italian restaurant, Alla Prossima.
Karangahape Road, known affectionately to locals as K’ Road, is a quirky, colourful and vibrant street on the edge of Auckland’s CBD. It buzzes from morning till night with baristas turning out excellent coffees early on, and clever chefs and cocktail-makers kicking in from the afternoon. Throughout the day people pop in and out of galleries and boutiques, where everything from designer jewellery and clothes to books, records and Kiwi-made gifts are on offer.
Abstract Hotel sits tucked in at the eastern end of the street, a proud part of this cool creative community. Our team lives and breathes this neighbourhood and we love to share it, so here’s our insider guide to some must-visit spots, in no particular order.
Fort Greene
Breakfast pastries and sourdough sandwiches
Start your day right with an unbeatable breakfast at Fort Greene, where the pastries rival those of a Parisienne boulangerie. Or sink your teeth into a sourdough sandwich with Kiwi flavours like the smoked kahawai fish finger option served on New York-style rye — they’re on offer until 2pm Monday to Saturday, and 1:30pm on Sunday. It’s an easy six-minute walk from Abstract, just before you reach the Rainbow Bridge.
Wander to the end of the historic St Kevins Arcade and dine at Gemmayze Street, a restaurant serving authentic Lebanese cuisine and elegant cocktails with a Middle Eastern twist. The hummus here is headline worthy. By day, the same space is occupied by a cute cafe called Bestie.
Looking to make a unique purchase while you’re passing through? K’ Road has got you. Buana Satu is a gift shop packed with colourful crafty items, including artworks and homewares that reflect the style of our Asia-Pacific region. Your search for a souvenir will be successful here!
A few doors down is Crushes boutique, where you’ll find a mix of new and vintage delights — whether it’s a pre-loved leather jacket, an original printed tee, or some locally made jewellery, homewares, candles and more.
One of New Zealand’s most celebrated jewellery designers, Nick Von K is also a proud K’ Road resident. Bold, bright and eye-catching, Nick Von K jewellery has been worn by international celebrities like Lady Gaga, and local ones like filmmaker Taika Waititi. The Nick Von K studio is in La Gonda Arcade, and is open 9:30am–6pm on weekdays or by appointment.
Literature buffs will feel right at home at The Green Dolphin Bookshop on Pitt Street. Step in and while away some time as you happily peruse their extensive range of quality second-hand and nearly-new books. It’s open 10am–5pm every day.
K’ Road has long been considered the creative heart of Auckland.
Artspace Aotearoa
Contemporary Auckland art gallery
K’ Road has long been considered the creative heart of Auckland, and testament to this is Artspace Aotearoa, a contemporary art gallery founded in 1987. You can call in and view the latest exhibition or attend one of their regular talks, tours and workshops. It’s on the corner of K’ Road and East street, a six-minute walk from Abstract. Speak to our team or check the Artspace website to see what’s on.
A couple of blocks further along K’ Road you’ll find Melanie Roger Gallery. Melanie is a prominent local gallerist and an expert in contemporary New Zealand art. Her gallery represents emerging and established artists from across the country and could be the perfect place to purchase an unforgettable piece.
One of K’ Road’s most beloved establishments is Coco’s Cantina, a bustling spot full of cheery people eating hearty Mediterranean-style meals. In fine weather locals love to sit outside with a glass of wine and watch the world go by.
Right across the road from Coco’s is Caluzzi Cabaret, New Zealand’s original drag queen dinner theatre. Here, your fabulous waitresses will dazzle you with their costumes and comedy, making it a memorable night in the very best way.
Start your evening at Abstract’s Terrace Bar, where happy hour runs from 4–6pm, then drift along to our delicious Italian restaurant Alla Prossima. Enjoy classic dishes including succulent braised beef cheeks, silky handmade pasta and creamy, dreamy tiramisu.
Most of the spots in this guide are within a six to ten minute walk from Abstract, right at the eastern end of K’ Road. You can comfortably cover several of them in one afternoon on foot.
What time do K’ Road shops and cafes open?
Cafes like Fort Greene open early for breakfast, while boutiques and galleries such as Crushes and Artspace Aotearoa tend to open from around 10am. Evening spots like Gemmayze Street and Coco’s Cantina come alive from late afternoon onward.
Is K’ Road walkable at night?
Yes. K’ Road is well lit and busy well into the evening, with restaurants, bars and Caluzzi Cabaret keeping the street lively after dark. It’s an easy walk back to Abstract from most venues on this list.
Can I book a table at Alla Prossima without leaving the hotel?
Absolutely. Alla Prossima is Abstract’s own restaurant, so guests can book a table or start the evening with happy hour at the Terrace Bar before heading out to explore the rest of K’ Road.
