Ensuring that every guest gets the most out of their stay at Abstract Hotel – and Auckland itself – is our Abstract Ambassador Gabriel Alarcon. It’s his job to curate the perfect Auckland experience, combining your interests and passions with his extensive knowledge of the opportunities and delights that surround the hotel and beyond.

Gabriel grew up in Mexico but fell in love with New Zealand while initially here on a working holiday. He has since made Auckland his home and has many great tips for where to go and what to do around town. Here he shares some of his own favourite haunts.

Good food galore

Gabriel Alarcon, Abstract Hotel’s Ambassador

A big fan of dining out and trying new flavours, Gabriel says, “On K’ Road there are so many great food options from every part of the world in one street. Personally, I love spicy food, so for others who do too, I always suggest an Indonesian restaurant called Java. They have crazy hot sambal, which I love, and it’s also a good place for vegetarian and vegan food.”

For those who can’t go past a good burger, Gabriel recommends the Korean fried chicken burger at Ziggle, or any of the juicy options on the menu at Lowbrow in St Kevins Arcade.

“My other favourite in St Kevins Arcade is Gemmayze Street, a Lebanese restaurant where all the food is amazing.”

For a simple snack that will make you feel like a true Kiwi, it’s worth sampling the national favourite: a meat pie. “Having a pie is a very New Zealand thing to do,” says Gabriel. “PieFee on K’ Road has lots of options. I like beef and jalapeño because I’m always looking for something spicy, but you can also get a classic mince and cheese if you prefer.”

Something to sip on

The neighbourhood also has lots to offer if you feel like stepping out for a refreshing beverage. Of course you can enjoy your first coffee with breakfast at Alla Prossima on the ground floor of Abstract, but if you need another caffeine hit, a top pick of Gabriel’s is Millers just over the road on Cross Street.

“I didn't drink coffee until I came to New Zealand,” says Gabriel, “but here there are so many great little cafes where you can catch up with friends. It’s a big part of the culture.” For something a little different from your average flat white, Gabriel says The Turkish Cafe is a great option.

For an afternoon or evening drink, Gabriel suggests Italian restaurant Casa Bella and French tapas bar Atelier for their excellent wine lists, which include local and European drops. “There’s also a Japanese bar that I love, called Acho’s. It’s not too busy and the vibe is great; you can get delicious fruit sake there.”

If you feel like a fancy cocktail, Gabriel says, “I would say go to AKA on Queen Street, which is lovely at sunset.”

I think driving over the Harbour Bridge is a great experience. To me it feels like a movie.

Sights to see

While eating and drinking your way around the neighbourhood is a perfectly reasonable way to spend your time, there are many other pleasures to be found around the city.

“For overseas visitors I recommend walking up Mt Eden for the best views. If you want to get a portrait picture, that’s the spot – especially at sunset,” he says.

Being a surfer, Gabriel enjoys the wild waves and epic views at Piha Beach on Auckland’s West Coast, which is approximately a one hour drive from the city. “On the way there you can stop in the cute village of Titirangi where there are nice restaurants too,” he adds.

Then finally, there’s a simple joy that many locals take for granted, but Gabriel still marvels at: “I think driving over the Harbour Bridge is a great experience. To me it feels like a movie. Once you’re there you can head over to Takapuna for a nice stroll on the sand of a beautiful beach.”
