At your service: Meet Jeffrey Lee, Abstract’s General Manager

Summary

Abstract’s General Manager Jeffrey Lee has spent 23 years working in some of Australia and New Zealand’s finest hotels, and says the boutique hotel’s art-filled, personality-driven spaces are perfect for a memorable stay. Here he shares his favourite running spots, nature-inspired day trips, perfect pizza on K’ Road, and what seamless service really means to him.

Behind every great stay at Abstract Hotel is our General Manager Jeffrey Lee. He’s spent the past 23 years honing his craft in some of the finest hotels in Australia and New Zealand, and he truly understands how to create a memorable guest experience. With its art-lined walls, atmospheric spaces, and prime location in Auckland’s creative precinct, Jeffrey says Abstract is the perfect canvas to make that happen.

“Our hotel is truly unique and we want our guests to feel that they’re in a home away from home when they’re with us. In some hotels you could be anywhere in the world, but Abstract is full of personality and that’s what makes it special.”

A short trip, a world away

Originally from Korea, Jeffrey has been calling New Zealand home for more than two decades and says it’s the proximity to incredible natural landscapes that makes him love life here so much. Even based right in the heart of the city at Abstract, Jeffrey finds ways to get his nature fix on a regular basis.

Catching a ferry from the downtown terminal to the delightful seaside suburb of Devonport is one of his favourite ways to do this. “Walking up North Head, being in green space and getting the views all across the beautiful harbour — I feel so relaxed there, even though it’s only a 10-minute trip from the city.”

Scenic places to step out

Jeffrey also loves to unwind by lacing up his sneakers and taking a jog around some of Auckland’s best parks and beaches. A mere 10-minute run from Abstract is Pukekawa / Auckland Domain, the city’s largest and oldest public park. Featuring lush green sports fields, enclaves of native New Zealand flora, and two grand glasshouses full of tropical specimens, it’s a stunning spot for a wander at whatever pace works for you.

Another favourite place for Jeffrey to stretch his legs is Tāmaki Drive, where fellow Aucklanders love to run. Heading east from the city, this stretch of coastal road with generous footpaths offers stunning beach views as it winds its way around multiple sheltered bays. “My favourite is Mission Bay,” says Jeffrey, who is always happy to refuel at one of the many cafes there.

Great eats near Abstract

Back by Abstract, Jeffrey says he’s spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out, but one place stands out for a quick bite. “I used to live in America and I loved to buy pizza by the slice. Now I do that at Sal’s Authentic New York Pizza, which is just up on K’ Road. I can’t go past the pepperoni.”

Also, nearby on Queen Street are a selection of Asian eateries where Jeffrey occasionally likes to enjoy the taste of Korea again. For a change of scene, Jeffrey takes a five-minute Uber to the stylish suburb of Ponsonby where top-tier restaurants and cafes abound, including buzzing bistro Prego.

Abstract is full of personality and that’s what makes it special.

Jeffrey’s lens on the neighbourhood

As an avid photographer, Jeffrey says he’s never short of inspiration around Abstract and along the famous K’ Road strip. From its mix of historic and modern architecture, ornate facades, colourful shop fronts, creative murals and the eclectic blend of Aucklanders that frequent its cafes, bars and restaurants, it’s an area that is full of life and beauty.

A seamless stay

Jeffrey Lee, Abstract Hotel’s General Manager

At the end of a city adventure, Jeffrey wants every guest to feel welcomed back to home base. The secret to creating this feeling, he says, comes from the staff themselves. “A great team of people who are motivated and inspired is the key to success. We want guests to feel that everything is seamless and to enjoy the many special touches we offer.”
